Dare County's first homeless shelter to open (The Virginian-Pilot)
Along the edges and in the shadows of Outer Banks life, there are people without homes, living day to day virtually invisible to most in the resort community. David B. Hollingsworth's favorite photograph for 2008 (The Virginian-Pilot)
Tropical Storm Hanna proved to be one of the more harmless storms to hit the Outer Banks. Residents and businesses were prepared for the worst; what they got was a brief driving rain and a good stiff wind. So, instead of shooting flooding, shelters and power outages, I was able to find two local boys enjoying the breeze with a tarp and their skateboards.
